Buying online in Cuenca

I am not located in Ecuador but I want to order some food and deliver to my friends in Cuenca as I know they are not having any income for 2 months (and more months to go). Is Coral hypermercado reliable for ordering online? Any other shop that I can order and pay online? Thanks,

A huge thank you from La Guarida, we have reached 110+ families!

La Guarida has been able to create 110 food kits for 110 different families in need. Each kit contains 16 essential items. This effort is only possible thanks to the donations of many of our friends and wonderful and thoughtful neighbors and customers. Again, this week we will create 60 to 70 more kits to distribute to those in need. Our efforts are only possible thanks to the kindness of so many friends and strangers. Now Cuenca Expats Helping Hands Fund has decided to help us as well. We are delighted that so many wonderful people are helping out in these troubled times and have joined these efforts.

We miss you all and we hope you are staying safe. We’ll be opening soon and hope to greet and hear from you again soon, very soon.

Thanks everyone,

Robert Bradley has always helped the community; it’s our turn to help

Robert Bradley needs our help.

A mainstay of the Cuenca expat community since he moved here from the US Pacific Northwest in 2016, Robert Bradley has suffered a series of devastating medical crises since late last year.

In October, he suffered a fall breaking four ribs and his clavicle, requiring surgery for the broken collar bone, which had left his arm unmoored. Unfortunately, this surgery broke the sterile field resulting in a body-wide infection that, in turn, severely infected his artificial knee and required emergency hospitalization in February for a replacement which he received after a month in the hospital. Upon release in March, he was told he needed a third operation within a matter of months for a permanent prosthetic and was sent home. During his physical rehabilitation, however, it was discovered that the temporary knee had been poorly installed, resulting in a new infection. Two well-respected orthopedists, after reviewing Robert’s bloodwork and X-rays, diagnosed that amputation of his leg would be required if a new knee was not installed within weeks. It is also clear to both doctors that the collar bone surgery needed to be redone. None of these issues take into account the long-scheduled back surgery he underwent in January.

All in all, he has spent nearly six months in hospital; endured two surgeries resulting in systemic infections. His options are now few. He faces amputation of his leg before Autumn, or immediate surgery to make him whole once again.

The continuing traumas have left Robert in excruciating pain, unable to walk, and on large doses of antibiotics and painkillers. They have also left him almost destitute.

We need Robert back at work in our community. Ironically, he is exactly the kind of person who would be actively assisting and providing innovative resources for the less fortunate in this critical period.

Robert has devoted his life to helping others help themselves.

In 2018, he founded Ecuador Expat Assist, a project to provide support for expats who live alone and are in need of assistance and companionship. He is well-known to readers of CuencaHighLife for his weekly column – “love letters to Cuenca.” In them, Robert always found the rainbow after an April thunderstorm and the sunshine in a child’s face during the dreary days of August. In addition, he is a well-regarded photographer focused on the everyday tenderness of the people of Cuenca. It is in character that the reason he fell in the first place was that he caught a woman who was herself falling when the ground gave way beneath her, saving her and beginning his odyssey.

Friends of Robert Bradley are sponsoring a GoFundMe campaign to get this dear man and valued member of our community back on his feet. Our goal is $16,000 to support the surgeries needed for his knee prosthetic and his shoulder. Together with Robert, we have consulted several recommended orthopedists and have chosen the one we all agree is best for him. The cost, which is based on careful — and readily available — itemization and oversight, will pay for the surgeries, hospitalization, and rehabilitation.

We can’t allow Robert, who has donated so much of his time in service to our community, to be neglected. His doctor recommends surgery by June 5th.

Giving new purpose to items you no longer need during COVID-19

What does Hogar de Esperanza do with your donations of clothing and household items? First and foremost, we give them away freely to those who are most in need of them. Any extra items are sold in our thrift shop, where all of the proceeds go back into directly supporting the foundation’s work of helping those in need. The thrift shop has been closed during the COVID-19 emergency, and we have been utilizing its contents to clothe and shelter those whom we are helping during this crisis.

We provide clothing to many mothers and children. Just yesterday, a teenage, single mother came to us with her newborn baby girl, asking for our help. She was in extreme need, without food for herself or anything to offer her child. In addition to providing her with a food basket, soap and diapers, she took home multiple warm, tiny outfits to clothe her new baby, all donations from generous supporters like you. Cuenca’s homeless come to us hungry, and wearing torn, wet, dirty clothes. We provide them with a warm meal and re-clothe them with the clothes and shoes you donate to the foundation. The beds, mattresses, sheets and towels you gave us are all in use now by our 38 residents. The household items and kitchen supplies are put into immediate use in the house, or are given away to poor families, sometimes migrant families, who are starting anew here, and striving towards self-sufficiency. Sales from the shop are used to purchase medicines for our patients, and pay for their transportation costs to the hospital. These are just a few examples of the many uses for the continuing lives of your in-kind donations of items.

Our thrift shop is being renovated right now by our homeless residents, allowing them to learn new skills while also giving them the opportunity to contribute something back to the foundation, and to feel useful during the long quarantine – it is a win-win for all of us. Once Cuenca receives the go-ahead to officially open up again, we plan to re-open the Esperanza Thrift Shop, freshly painted, better organized, and (hopefully) re-stocked. But we need your help! Are you moving soon – perhaps across town or maybe even back home – and you have items that you can’t take with you? Do you wish you had someone to come carry away those items remaining after your moving sale, that you don’t know what to do with? Were you just spring cleaning last week, and came across clothes in your closets that you no longer wanted? If you would like to do some incredible things with those items you no longer need or want, let us turn them into something valuable to help those in need.

We accept anything that you wish to donate, and are happy to come pick up your donations to keep you safe at home during the health emergency and lockdown. Please contact us to arrange a time for pick-up. Thank you so much for your support of Hogar de Esperanza – we could not do any of this without you.

COVID-19 IgM/IgG rapid test

Test kits are allowed for use by clinical laboratories or healthcare center for point-of-care testing with the previous permission of the Ministry of Health and with Permiso Sanitario of Ecuador.
In response to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, Casa de Bienestar, with the collaboration of Dr. Fernando Juca and Dr. Viviana Gomez, is now offering the IgM/IgG antibody rapid test kit. This test can be beneficial for people who are required to go back to work and need a health certificate or who wants to know if they had/have de virus or someone who has been in contact with an infected person.

This COVID-19 Rapid Test Kit is suitable for the qualitative detection of SARS-CoV-2 IgM/IgG antibodies in whole blood. Common signs of infection with SARS-CoV-2 include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath, and dyspnea. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death. SARS-CoV-2 can be excreted through respiratory secretions or transmitted through oral fluids, sneezing, physical contact, and through air droplets.

Screening for COVID-19 IgM and IgG antibodies is a rapid and effective method for the diagnosis of COVID-19 infection. The IgM and IgG antibody test can also provide information on the stage of the disease.

Both Immunoglobulin M (IgM) and Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies are produced during the first stage of an immune response. As the body’s most significant antibody, IgM is the primary antibody to appear in response to initial exposure to antigens. IgM provides the first line of defense during viral infections, followed by the generation of adaptive, high-affinity Immunoglobulin G (IgG) responses for long-term immunity and immunological memory. IgG is usually detectable about 7 days after the IgM appears.

• Rapid diagnostic testing.
• Results in 15 minutes.
• Single blood sample by finger prick.

Test in our Center $50.
Test at home $60.

Pet care during quarantine

La Mia Mascota Veterinary and Pet Shop offers these suggestions to help you to continue good practices for the health and safety of your pet during quarantine:

 1. Before you go out to buy groceries, remember to check the food for your pet and purchase it before you run out.
 2. When you return to your house, don’t touch your pets until you have washed your hands. Don’t let them lick your face. Be careful they don’t jump on furniture until you have washed their paws carefully.
 3. Continue providing physical activity. If you can’t take your pet out, play with it in the house. During quarantine you should never go out to play or run in the park or the street.
 4. During the quarantine you can go out so your pet can take care of its needs but only one member of the family should walk the dog. It should not be taken on long walks – stay near the house.

If you have questions or concerns about your pet’s health, don’t hesitate to call us – we have delivery service for products from the pet shop and veterinary service by appointment until 19:00.

Daily encouragement from Trinity Vineyard Church

Spiritual growth and serving

“Then will I purify the lips of the peoples, that all of them may call on the name of the LORD and serve him shoulder to shoulder.” Zephaniah 3:9

Serving produces spiritual growth. As you serve God by serving others you develop spiritual muscles. Spiritual growth produces serving and serving produces spiritual growth. God does not want you to stay where you are in your spiritual development. God wants you to grow spiritually and to demonstrate that spiritual growth through serving.

Serving involves placing the needs of others before your own. To be other-centered is to follow the example of Jesus and to give evidence of spiritual growth. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4). Serving is a process of allowing the life of Christ to be realized through your life to others.

Selfishness is an indication of spiritual immaturity. Selflessness is an indication of spiritual maturity. What will you model, selfishness or selflessness? Will you diligently serve others or persistently seek to be served by others?

Spend a few moments right now expressing your availability to God for His use. Allow Him to have His way in your life. As you serve others, the love of Jesus will flow through you like a river.

Ordonez Lasso.

Weldon Edwards:

Musicians wanted

The Spirit is moving and so are we. Trinity Vineyard Church Cuenca has moved to a new location that has all the room we need for our worship services and to serve our community.

Our new location has enough room for a worship team to lead us into the presence of God. We worship in English and Spanish. All we need is a few musicians and singers to join our team. So, if you play drums, keys, electric guitar, bass, acoustic guitar, and/or can sing we want to talk to you.

We will begin meeting again soon so, write to Weldon Edwards at or Marleah Baird at and let us know your interest. We will get back to you right away.

Trinity Vineyard Church is located on Ordonez Lasso on the first floor of the Riverside Building (same building as Banco Pichincha)

All our beer is hand made here in Cuenca using food grade Stainless Steel equipment with all the correct permissions/registro sanitarios. Deliveries will be 8 AM to 11 AM on Thursdays (due to current restrictions). Please have all orders in by Wednesday to ensure on-time delivery. We have a minimum of 6 beers per order. Beers are $3 each (300ml). For more info about The Hop Factory and our beer visit

We also have Coffee and Coffee liqueur available:

We are the only distributor of Vilcabamba’s Café Dona Julita in Cuenca. We started offering it for sale because it is all we drink and as long as we can keep the supply coming in we will share with the public.

The three styles are:

“Premium” dark roast $4/400g available in whole bean or ground (finely ground).
“Gourmet” medium roast $5/400g available in whole bean or ground (course grind).
“Honey:” 1 ground, 1 bean left till next delivery… dark roast $6/400g available in whole bean or ground (the grind is not super fine-more coarse than the Premium dark roast similar to the Gourmet). This is a special coffee made for our Black Honey coffee liqueur with Bourbon beans, we let the white pulp of the coffee bean air dry to create a coffee honey coating prior to roasting. Rare and amazing but limited supply.

Our Black Honey is our fantastic coffee liqueur. Developed from a year-long collaboration with the Dona Julita team and our team at The Hop Factory. Very similar to Kahlua but fresh brewed with no preservatives/filters to create a 100% locally made natural taste. (makes amazing white/black Russians) $15 per bottle (750 ml 16% abv). **Shake before serving as it is all natural and unfiltered.
All orders must be $18 or $2 will be added for delivery.
We look forward to the world getting back to normal and inviting you all back out to our little hidden brewery. In the meantime, we are here to help you enjoy life a little more at home.

Casa de Bienestr – pulmonary function testing (spirometry )

Spirometry helps diagnose many respiratory diseases, restrictive obstructive lung disorders, diagnose asthma, chronic bronchitis from bronchial asthmas.

It also explains the cause of symptoms in patients who are clinically healthy as the initial detention of small airway disease.

The spirometry helps to assess the course of the disease and the therapy to follow.

Spirometry usually measures:
• How much air you can blow out in a relaxed manner, like a gentle sigh out, until your lungs are empty (slow vital capacity or VC)
• The amount of air you can blow out in one second. With healthy lungs and airways, you can generally blow out most of the air from your lungs in one second (forced expiratory volume in one second, or FEV1)
• The total amount of air you can blow out in one complete breath after taking a deep breath in. You will be asked to blow out as hard and as fast as you can until your lungs are empty. This is called your forced vital capacity or FVC

Dr. Fernando Juca will look at how much air you can blow out in the first second (FEV1), and compare to the total amount (FVC) giving a percentage of air you can blow out in the first second.

He will compare your measurements with the normal range of values. The curves drawn by the spirometer showing the pattern of airflow are also essential to help understand your results and further test that it might need to determine the right treatment for you.

Dr. Fernando Juca can help you determine the stage and the best treatment for you. Call us to make you an appointment or to coordinate a house call.

Back by popular demand at The Good Life Cafe

May is National Hamburger Month in case you didn’t know. I wonder how they determine these things. Anyhow, we are bringing back the most popular hamburger to date, The Mushroom Swiss Burger. For Tuesday, May 19th, 2020

Order online at or Call: 096 269 4801
We are closed on Mondays.
We take orders between 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM Tues – Sunday

The Mushroom Swiss burger is 5 oz. of hamburger cooked to perfection, topped with sauteed mushrooms and Swiss Cheese. Amazing is a word that is commonly used to describe the taste of this burger. And, it is only $5

Here is our menu – by the way, we added a new sandwich called the Castro…It is, as we say in the north, wicked good.

1. Bacon Cheese Burger (we cannot get Smokehouse Bacon at the moment, but as soon as we can we will go back to using it on our burgers) – 5 oz. of ground beef cooked to perfection, topped with bacon, cheddar cheese, onions, lettuce and tomatoes and Professor Pat’s Bar-B-Que sauce – $5 For the Entire Month of May – Also, see daily burger specials for the Month of May which is National Hamburger Month

2. Big Ass Burrito – Your choice of chicken, ground beef or vegetarian, Mediterranean rice, black beans, corn, sauteed onions and peppers, mixed cheese, guacamole, and our special South Western sauce – $6.95

3.Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich – The Closest thing to a real Philly Cheesesteak in Cuenca – Lomo Fino cooked to perfections with Sauteed Peppers and Onions with Cheddar & Mozzarella Cheese packed into a freshly baked sub roll – $7.95

4. Chicken Cheesesteak Sandwich – Chicken Breast cooked to perfections with Sauteed Peppers and Onions with Cheddar & Mozzarella Cheese packed into a freshly baked sub roll – $6.95

5. Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos – “Better than Bone Fish Grill” – Lightly breaded and fried shrimp (from the sea, Not farmed), our homemade cole slaw and our proprietary bang bang sauce. Each order comes with 2 big tacos – $7.95

6. Quintessentially Quixotic Quesadilla – This Ain’t Jo Mamma’s Quesadilla – Our quesadilla is BIG…we’re talkin’ really big. It is crammed full of ingredients including chicken or beef, sauteed onions and peppers, corn, black beans and cheese. – $6.50

7. The Castro – A new twist on the old Cuban sandwich – Chicken, ham, cheese, homemade pickles and mustard served on a sub roll. – $6.50

Also, our stir fry went over so well yesterday we are adding it to the menu permanently. Our stir fry is awesome and has tons of fresh veggies including zucchini, summer squash, green peppers, onions, mushrooms, broccoli and cauliflower. If you stopped there it would be a hell of a vegetarian meal. But we have beef, chicken and shrimp that can be added to it. On top of that we have two sauces, teriyaki and coconut curry, each is amazing. The prices are great too. Vegetarian $6, Chicken or Beef $7 and Shrimp $8. This is a crazy good meal for a very reasonable price and you can have it delivered to your door.

Thanks for your continued support.

Vegan and veggie lunches delivered to your doorstep

Our bistro called Good Karma is just on the brink of opening. I was holding off sharing this news with you all until we were ready to open our doors, unfortunately the quarantine halted the final steps of the construction for the dining halls and terraces.

We took the challenge in stride and began cooking and delivering vegan and veggie meals from Monday through Friday. Every day of the week varies in cuisine and menu.
The meals cost $3.75 plus $0.30 for our compostable delivery containers, should you require them. Or else we can swap reusable Tupperware which would be sanitized after each use.

Delivery cost is extra, however we found a reliable delivery service that only charges $1.50 for deliveries within the city up to $2.50 on the outskirts. We also deliver to Challuabamba and Tarqui if any of you are out that far. However, many of our clients do come by and pick up their meals as we are very central.

In addition to the daily menu there are always some extras and deserts which you can order at an additional cost.

We also brew some of the finest Kombucha you’ve had. Satisfaction guaranteed (if your into Kombucha that is.

Can check you out on Instagram:

Or else write to us on WhatsApp so we can add you to our list of clients for you to receive the menus and promotions.

Thanks for your consideration.
