Serving the community for three years

Esperanza Thrift Shop is celebrating three years in operation. We have given thousands of clothing items to those in need. In addition, sales have helped us provide medications, transportation and other services for patients referred to us. From homeless youth, single mothers, those in medical crises, and migrants, we have been Cuenca’s go-to source for many agencies and hospitals when their clients need help.

What sets us apart is that we are a direct service organization where items donated are put to immediate use. It is common for donated items in other places to end up being sold in markets, stored or discarded. We never do that. Everything we receive is put to good use. We have resized clothing, made baby blankets and even dog toys from unusable items. Esperanza Thrift Shop is Cuenca’s only legally registered Thrift Shop with authorization from the government to provide to those in need.

Our inventories are extremely low and we need your support to help us provide for those going through hard times, especially now during this Christmas season. If you would like to make a donation of items, you can drop them off at Juan Montalvo 8-18 and Mariscal Sucre daily from 10am to 5:30 PM, or you can call us to arrange for pickup. You will be provided with a receipt for the value of the items, in addition to our highest gratitude. We appreciate your continued support of Hogar de Esperanza.

Donate a toy and give joy to a child this Christmas!!!

Hola Amigos,

I take this space to request your support. I’m collecting used toys (in good condition) for 210 children from an indigenous community in Otavalo, Imbabura.

These children are protected by “Fundación Amor a la Vida – FAV”, based in Carabuela, Parroquia de Ilumán, Canton Otavalo, Imbabura. The purpose of the foundation is to help children and adults in their integral formation, covering 5 axes:

– Cognitive Development,
– Socio-Emotional Development,
– Christian Education and Values,
– Vocational Development and
– Individual attention to the child for health prevention.

I had the opportunity to learn about the Fundación Amor a la Vida (FAV) that is organized by the indigenous people of Carabuela and they cater for children and adults.

Therefore, if you have children between 3 and 12 years old or know someone who has children and have used toys that they no longer use and can donate, will be well received. This is intended to bring a little joy to these children and can have a gift at their Christmas party to be held on December 7.

Any other kind of help you want to give as Clothes (Children and adults), food for the celebration, items that can be sold to generate funds that will be used to transport toys, etc. will also be welcome.

If you have the opportunity to donate any, please write me by email by WhatsApp and it will be a pleasure to pick up.

If you want more information about the community and the project, I can gladly give you more details.

Please, if you know any family that can also donate toys or give other support, I would appreciate if you could share this post and my contact.

Details:

– Christmas party for the children will be at Dec. 7, and for adults at Jan. 6.
– Place: Fundación Amor a la Vida, Carabuela, Cantón Otavalo, Provincia Imbabura

This link is for view a Video of the children. You can download for google drive.

Poor Lassie – abandoned by previous owner

Lassie, a small/med size Golden Labrador mix, is a very sweet and gentle girl about 3-years old. She’s been groomed, spayed and has received all annual vaccinations.

When her owners moved away, they tied her inside the house. The next-door neighbor heard her cries for help and broke into the house to save little Lassie.

Lassie is a sweet adorable and manageable doggie with excellent manners.

Would you consider giving her a chance in a real loving home? She will love you and I know you will love her.

Please contact for photos or any other information.

Thank you,

Thank you so much for your concern, I really appreciate it.

Actually I rescued Lassie. She used to live next to my house, with awful owners. Until last week, that we noticed a huge truck in the neighborhood, and these people moved to another place, leaving Lassie in the house.

She was tied up at the corner of the house, she was crying and asking for her freedom. She looked very sad, and conquered me, with her sweet eyes. So, I had to break into her house, I borrowed a ladder of my neighbors, and I climbed into her house. I know this is a crime here, to break into a house that is not yours; but I thought, Isn’t it a crime to abandon your own dog to her faith, inside your house? That’s a crime for me…so, anyway, yes, I broke into her house and took her in my arms, because she was unable to walk, for her bad situation.

As a result of a terrible treatment of her owners, she’s limping on her right leg; she was abused many times, kicked off the house many times, and she didn’t eat or drink in days, and we couldn’t help her, because she used to be tied in her house.

But, those bad days for Lassie are over. I rescued her, and I took her to Clinica Veterinaria Gallardo, where, Dr. Javier Gallardo, gave her all the attention and caring for a few days. She even stayed there, because she needed to be treated for her bad health, but now, she looks new; she’s reborn to a new Life, and she deserves all the best. What kind of human being, commits a crime like that? I’ve never seen anything like this myself, this is simply cruel.

Lassie is in my house now, but, she’s looking for her forever home to stay and be happy and make you the happiest person ever. She’s an adorable puppy, very sweet and affectionate, you’ll love her, she’s very obedient and calm.

Give her a chance to live her life in a nice environment, and a nice home, with people that love her; she really deserves it.

Dear Emma needs a new loving home

Darling Emma is looking for a new home. She is a miniature Schnauzer about 4-years old and she’s been spayed. She is current on her vaccinations and does not have any health issues. Her Veterinarian is Dr. Javier Gallardo. She is groomed and just adorable.

Emma would prefer not to be picked up although she is a fabulous lap dog. She’s a compact and a fun-size doggie. Working on house training and Emma is still not totally housebroken and so she will have an accident if she mimics the other two doggies who are not completely housebroken. Frequent trips outside with lots of reinforcement will help her learning process. Emma loves affection and sleeps on the bed with her owner. She has no history of biting humans.

We don’t know if she would be compatible with a kitty. She prefers respectful adults and older children. We believe she would do best as an only doggie in a calm environment.

She has been known to be feisty from time to time. If you have small doggies, you know what I’m talking about. Oh, she’s so smart and sometimes an escape artist. Emma is not fond of loud noises like thunder. Bottom line is that she is lively and a joy to have in the home.

Here’s what the current owner is saying:

I have three dogs that are all rescued in one form or another. Unfortunately, two of the dogs–both spayed females–have taken an intense dislike to each other and have had some ferocious fights. Right now, I have them separated, taking turns in the crate I have. My experience from other dogs is that once animus has been established it won’t go away. For their safety, I need to re-home one. It is a decision that is very difficult, I love them both.

Emma responds to cues. For example, I can say, “Outside” or “a fuera” (she’s somewhat bilingual) and she will go to the door. She responds to her name and comes when called.

Recommendation for Kenneth Palacios, trips to Cuenca.

He picked me up from the airport and drove me to Cuenca. He is a really, really nice person and he speaks English perfectly. He is a very good driver, which made me feel safe. He is polite, kind, and honest. I recommend him 100% to take you in safety to Cuenca.

Recommendation for Leo Loza, driver, general all-type help and handyman

Leo is a Cuenca born and bred taxi driver, who spent time working in Boston USA. His English is fine for the job, and that job is pretty much anything you want. You need a ride to Guayaquil, or anywhere else for that matter; you ‘re sick and need someone to do your shopping – just send him your requirements, he will shop and deliver for you; need something heavy moved around the house or a pair of hands, or some local knowledge, whatever you want, Leo will provide. He is courteous – that rare thing these days, a real gentleman -honest and attentive.

I recently fell ill while attending an event up at Santa Ana. Thank God I had got Leo to drive me. He made the decision to take me to hospital, got me down in record time, and waited for me to have treatment, translating for me all the time. Then he took me home. Leo has cared for a few sick people now, doing all these jobs and helping them to hospital. Because of his kindness, excellent pricing, attention to detail, and honesty, I can’t recommend him too highly.

Recommendation for Veronica and Cuenca’s Best Properties, real estate

Overall, our experience with Veronica and Cuencas Best Properties has been very pleasant and fruitful, considering that we’re essentially newcomers to the beautiful city (Cuenca) and country and did not know much about the Real estate ‘ins and outs’ in the area. She offered her time and professionalism to help us find the right property. She also provided us with needed information that helped us make informed decisions. She, likewise introduced us to a reputable attorney who was very helpful in helping us go through the legal requirements of the purchase of our condo unit. We will be more than happy to refer friends who may be interested in real estate opportunities in the future and experience the same ‘journey’ we had with Her valuable help.

Thank you,

Recommendation for Javier Vanegas, facilitator and translator

I requested Javi Vanegas’ services to facilitate ending my WIFI contract with Etapa. The WIFI was known to not work in my neighborhood in Cochapamba above El Valle. If I had asked neighbors, I would have been told that. Javi prepared my justifiable case by showing me which Etapa office worked with these problems, and we were able to produce evidence that technicians had been out to my house three times and could not stabilize their wifi.

This week Javi helped me with the representative from “ServiCable” and set up the meeting with the agent. Javi worked as translator for me in both cases. Javi will help teaching Spanish too. He is knowledgeable in different areas. Call him or send an email to talk with him. He is fair minded in business, and helpful with elders who need advice and assistance

Only 3 days left for the Great Nanaimo Bar Giveaway

I’m David, and my new business is called DEFY (Dave’s Earth-Friendly Yearnings). I’ll be “satisfying your yearnings by delivering organic vegetarian gourmet treats, in an earth-friendly way”.

To celebrate the kick-off of my new venture, I’ve created the Great Nanaimo Bar Giveaway. I’ll be giving everyone who sends me an email (to david@defyforlife.com) before 4 pm Thursday November 14th two Nanaimo Bars for free, which I’ll deliver with my bike on Saturday the 16th, again, for free.

What are Nanaimo Bars? Well, they’re a super popular Canadian dessert with 3 layers: The base has vanilla cookie crumbs (in Ecuador), chocolate, walnuts and coconut; the middle layer has icing; and the top layer is chocolate. Sound good? Do you like sweet chocolate? What are you waiting for then?

When you order the 2 free bars, you get your name in a draw for a slab of Nanaimo Bars (16 bars, approx. value $16). For every 20 names that I get, I’ll add another slab (16 bars) to the draw. For example, if there are 65 names, I’ll put 4 slabs into the draw. 1 for the 1st 20, a 2nd for the next 20, and a 3rd for the next 20, and a 4th for the excess.

So, what do you have to lose? What do you have to gain? Mmmmmm.

But I’m not finished yet. He-he. When you refer someone else, and they send me an email asking for the 2 free Nanaimo bars, their name goes into the draw, and yours goes in again. So, for example, if you were to refer 10 friends, and they all ordered the free Nanaimo bars, all their names go into the draw, your name goes in 10 more times, and I add another slab of bars to the draw. Now, I’m not saying you should do that (but I wouldn’t stop you if you did :). If you did, your chance of winning a slab of 16 bars would go up big time. You might even win 2. In fact, technically, you could win them all. Woah.

I just have one small favor to ask. I’m giving you 2 Nanaimo Bars. But they’re not quite the same. One is my Mom’s original recipe (and everyone in Canada who’s tried them says they’re the best!). The other has the same ingredients except ½ the amount of icing in the middle layer. Therefore, the second one is less sweet. I’ve already gotten feedback (mostly from Ecuadorians) that they prefer the less sweet version. The only way for me to know which one you like best is to have you try them both and then let me know.

Now this isn’t obligatory, but if you like one of them, please let me know. Once I have the numbers in, I’ll be able to decide if I should offer the original recipe, the “Ecuadorian” less sweet style, or even both. Only with quality feedback will I know for sure.

To recap, if you order (send an email to david@defyforlife.com) the 2 free Nanaimo Bars before 4 pm Thursday the 14th, I’ll deliver them to you for free. You’ll get your name in a draw for a slab of 16 more. When you refer friends, your odds of winning go up even more. I only ask for your feedback to help me serve you even better.

So, please go to the Great Nanaimo Bar Giveaway Event on my Facebook Page: Defy for Life, at https://www.facebook.com/events/482395245691822/ (you can cut and paste this URL). and find out what Nanaimo Bars are (they really are awesome), see the pictures, and check out the testimonials. You’ll see Mike from Mike’s Meats, Jackie from Fabiano’s Pizza, and Bernie and Nancy from Bernan’s all talking about my Nanaimo Bars. Like my Page, post a comment, order your free bars, and enjoy!

Special promotion – Thanksgiving turkeys at Mike’s Meats

To all our friends and clients, we’re extremely happy to announce that we’ll be offering Thanksgiving turkeys at a cost we think you’ll appreciate.

Three different size turkeys will be available:

Small – Approximate weight 15 – 20 lbs.
Medium – Approximate weight 20 – 24 lbs.
Large – Approximate weight 24 – 28 lbs.

All sizes run $2.80/lb. Your choice.

Given that Thanksgiving falls on November 28, we will have them available beginning November 25 (allowing you enough time to defrost the turkey in time for your Thanksgiving feast).

To pre-order your turkey, we only ask for a $20 deposit so that we can calculate how many turkeys to order. Pre-orders available for the next three days (through this Wednesday).

On another note, as many of you already know, we are in the process of changing our processor/packer. It is for that reason that we have been out of stock on our various American style premium beef cuts these last couple of weeks. We believe that we’ll have all your favorite beef *and* pork cuts available as soon as next week.

We couldn’t be more sorry about the wait, but honestly believe that the delay will be well worth your patience as we move forward to offer only the very best quality available in Cuenca….all at *substantially* reduced prices.

Additionally, this change will also allow us to offer all your favorite pork cuts, including, but not limited to, Baby Back ribs, Saint Luis style ribs or standard cut racks of ribs as well as various types of pork chops, “Boston Butt”, pork loin as well as other popular pork cuts…all at a cost that will be *extremely* competitive and of the highest quality available.

In other news, we’ll also begin to offer chicken; either whole chickens or the cuts you most enjoy; breasts, legs, thighs and (of course) wings. they’re all packed (roughly) 5lbs per pouch. Available frozen or thawed. All at a cost that is extremely attractive and very affordable. A variety of lamb cuts available with a day’s notice.

In the meantime, of course, we’re offering all our popular artisanal deli products; Pastrami, Corned Beef, Italian dry salami, Roast Beef, Roast and/or Smoked turkey, various aged/hard cheeses, Applewood smoked bacon and Prosciutto, smoked/cured salmon and grouper, “shmears”, Polish Kielbasa as well as a variety of sausages (Italian chicken or pork). As well as our fresh daily prepared salads; Coleslaw, Hummus, Israeli salad and (my grandmother’s famous) chopped liver. And, as always, our popular deli sandwich combos.

Not to mention our fresh daily baked artisanal breads and homemade delicious pastries and desserts; chocolate cake, New York style cheesecake, apple strudel, carrot cake, chocolate eclairs, profiteroles and cannoli.

We can’t forget to mention our imported Portuguese and Spanish wines as well as our artisanal liquors and beers.

Regarding the turkeys, we’ll be accepting orders until tomorrow afternoon, November 13, 7 PM, in order to allow for enough lead-time to ensure that you’ll have your turkey for the holiday. Feel free to stop by whenever you’re in the neighborhood to place your turkey order (today or tomorrow)

We sincerely apologize, from the bottom of our hearts, for all those who have waited until we resolved our packing/processing issues and our lack of inventory over these last couple of weeks.

We would like to thank you very much for your patience, patronage and understanding while we worked through our issues in order to provide a much better product and a significantly lower cost.

We look forward to seeing you and hope you’ll have the chance to stop by to sample many of our very delicious products.

Our very warm regards and best holiday wishes to all.

Until tomorrow 7 PM, November 13. Front corner of Parque de la Madre. 12 de Abril y Federico Malo. (Next to the military hospital).
