Helping families with autism in Ecuador

In Ecuador, many families live with the sad reality of having a family member with a disability. Autism (and other disabilities) is a terrible problem when there is little to no support from the government.

There are great programs, providing support, for people with disabilities, in the United States. One, in particular, is called ¨Lambs Farm”. We are looking to use this as a model for a countrywide project in Ecuador. This will entail acquiring land, creating a therapeutic farm, building an educational center and clinic. This will provide support for children with disabilities and their families. It will provide information to the government. This is all part of an attempt to heighten the awareness about the urgent need for support.

On February 15, in the beautiful Hotel Inca Real, we are having a Valentine’s Day Weekend Gala. It will be a formal event – Gourmet food and some of the best music in Ecuador. Charity with rhythm!

We have created this event with the solidarity of many other charities in Cuenca. These charities will also benefit from the ticket sales. Tickets are $75 and are selling nicely. You can purchase your tickets from us or from your favorite charity. We are inviting guests from all over the country and from other countries.

This will, also, boost tourism in Cuenca. Cuenca is the perfect place to be with your sweetheart.

Please feel free to share this post.

Thank you,

February 15th, 2010, $75, Hotel Inca Real – General Torres 8-40 between Sucre and Bolivar, Cuenca.

Seeking gastroenterologist recommendation to treat ulcerative colitis

Hi,

I am looking for an MD here in Cuenca to treat ulcerative colitis. If s/he speaks English that’s great, but I’m more than willing to bring an interpreter so I can see a good doctor. So, what I’m really looking for is a great gastroenterologist who is familiar with treating ulcerative colitis.

If you have a suggestion for a medication which you are using to treat the same condition, and which you have been able to find locally, I would appreciate hearing that information as well.

Thank you for any information you can share.

Kindly.

Ana Luisa Spanish classes, last session of this year. October 21st

Join us for our last session of this year which begins on Monday, October 21st.

What do you need to learn Spanish?

• Motivation (to keep going)

• Focus (to be effective)

• Time (for everything to sink in)

Language is best taught when it is being used to transmit messages.

The activities in class have these elements: comprehension, interest and involvement, and meaningful repetition.

Our goal with the oral approach method is to involve our students and others who are learning Spanish in experiences that provide the opportunity to know more about the daily lives of people, share and talk with them, and learn about the culture through classes in group, lectures and students’ trips.

For those who have never taken a class with us…why not give it a try? It doesn’t hurt.

Classes start on October 21st for all levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each class includes 18 hours of instruction over a 6-week period and meets twice per week for 1.5 hours. In addition, each class includes a 2-hour Cultural Lecture. Cost is $100. Classes will meet at Mora´s Café, Honorato Loyola 1-152 y Agustin Cueva.

Recommendation for Royal Palace Chinese, restaurant

Having lived for many years a couple of blocks from Chinatown in San Francisco, my wife and I despaired of ever enjoying great Chinese food in Cuenca. To our delight, in recent years a number of decent restaurants have opened their doors here. Foremost among them, in our opinion, is Royal Palace Chinese Restaurant.

We visited them at their new location on Ave. Ricardo Munoz, a half block south of Ave. Remigio Crespo, next to the El Bodegon liquor store. (Note that the restaurant is no longer near the airport.) As others have reported, the menu is very large indeed, and everything we tried was absolutely excellent and authentic. Friends of ours from another Chinese-centric city, Vancouver, rave about the place as well.

Luis is the very friendly front room manager while his father runs the kitchen. Both have extensive culinary experience in both Ecuador and China. Portions are not only delicious but also generous. You will not be disappointed!

Incidentally, you can see their entire menu at their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/royalpalacecuenca/

Recommendation for Mustafa Aladawi, computer and television technician

When my eight-year-old lap top crashed, Mustafa did his best to resurrect it. Recognizing the futility of it all, I asked Mustafa to assist me in buying a new one locally. Thanks to his computer expertise and personal connections with key computer store personnel in Cuenca, he was able to get me a very good deal on a new laptop.

I am about to use Mustafa for setting up a new laptop for my wife as well, including transferring all her programs and files from her old desktop computer to her laptop.

Mustafa is very punctual, quite reasonably priced, and speaks very good English. Friends give him high marks for installing Fire Sticks, etc.
